Working on my 'resting weight'

Today I went to a funeral.  It was someone not connected to racing and to be in another world where no one cared about the 1-8 shot that I should have been on hosing up at Taunton was good for me.

There’s a wide world out there outside of our racing bubble and I’m trying to be an adult and take this opportunity of my time off to see it a bit.  It’s important I think that we do from time to time.

Yesterday I went to the Nuffield in Cheltenham for my pre-op ahead of my operation on Monday.  This basically involved swab and blood testing to ensure I’m virus and disease free, in fit shape and good to go, which I am.

I also made contact with the IJF team at Oaksey House.  I’m likely to be in plaster for about a week, but after that, I’ll be there every day.
In the meantime, it’s key to maintain a healthy weight and work on my nutrition so we put together a plan for that.

When I started out riding, we didn’t get the same sort of detailed advice we do now.

But now we’re encouraged to eat small meals – about 5-6 a day.  This means we don’t go without meals, plus we snack between them.  So we are both full and taking on good nutrition.  So I’ll take on small main meals such as chicken and veg, and snack on things such as oranges and apples.  Plus drink plenty of water.

If you train your body to work in this way, plus of course do plenty of exercise, you become a better athlete who can eat more but maintain the same weight.                                                                                                                                                                                

I’m lucky as I’m quite small anyway and my usual riding weight is about 9 stone 13.  I’ll allow myself to put on about 5lb whilst I’m off.  That is what I call my ‘resting weight’.  Following the nutrition plan we have 

put in place, it means I’ll stay fit and healthy and also give myself a rest - but a healthy one.  My nutrition is just as important whilst I’m off as when I’m riding.


Speaking to the team at Oaksey was also good for me mentally as it gave me a plan and there’s something in place to focus on. 

Cheltenham will be hard this weekend, but I want to go there with a positive mind and try and be helpful.
